Zenchou City

"You're tellin' me this place was named after those... 'people'? Well, I'm sure it can't be that bad, right?"

A vast, bustling city within Japan's Kyushu region, the very land that Zenchou would be founded upon originally formed of its own accord a mere two centuries ago, extending further out beyond the natural bounds of the region itself and outside of the bounds of prefectures. It is known for its consistent crime and most importantly its 'hot spot' of irregularities in the form of spiritually adept. Originally bearing a regular name, it acquired its new name of 'Zenchou' (meaning omen) at the turn of the twentieth century, and although many (spiritual adept and regular humans alike) have tried to make it a livable location, it has struggled and strained against all communal efforts. Spiritual adept have become the normal within this city, proliferating a variety of different jobs & career paths of mostly the local orientation, and businesses in the past several decades have popped up mainly catering to - as well as being headed by Spiritualists.

The proficiency of being a spiritual adept - sometimes dubbed 'neo-humans' by their human supporters, has all but flushed the necessity for regular people out of the system & swing of things barring tasks that 'no one' wants to operate. In the past two decades, the city has seen home to even more irregularities than they've been accustomed to for years, these being the Adepts and Soulborn alike under the guise of being other Spiritualists carrying out their 'business as normal'; fighting stronger spiritual-adept in the case of Soulborn and pursuing of dangerous spiritual oddities for Adepts.

In the current time, this population increment has risen to a degree that's prompted rebuffing from humans. Even Zenchou's government itself has grown distasteful of the people within their walls, as looks of praise & impression have fallen to scrutiny among the common man. Pitied by some of their supernatural neighbors as others stomp out their wellbeing, the increase of means to potentially bring harm to these people has only furthered over the years, with even some of their own being turned against them both to investigate the influx of newcomers and 'keep a handle' on most spiritualists, under the protective arms of an agency.

Climate

From one extreme to another, Zenchou is usually either incredibly hot or incredibly cold with no in-between. From September to February, it is the winter, and from March to August it is summer, with the occasional 'spring-like days' dotted through the latter. Temperatures in the hotter months tend to range between 80F~100F (26C~38C), while the colder regions tend to range between -9~40 (-22C~4C). Weather is just as absurd, with heat waves, humid rain showers, and thickets of snow being considered normal specifically for this location.

Terrain

The land surrounding Zenchou ever since its 'emergence' has been irreparably changed by the presence of those dwelling within it. Metals that would normally be only a few 'steps' more pliant and resilient than the average human have seemingly grown tougher over the decades of exposure to the new matter form to reality that is reishi, creating things such as Hinoki Timber, Burnboo, Gild Sheen and so forth (rest are listed here). This seeming 'mutation' on materials has had the most effect here in Zenchou City, making it a practical gold mine for spiritually adept to get their hands on useful materials to work with, and is what originally drew Adepts from other parts of the world to here. . . aside from the hustle & bustle that Spiritualists spur with their existence.

Phenomena

Things commonly noticed by spiritually adept and mundane, regular people alike.

  • Distortions within the very physicality of things anywhere, at any time. This is usually a sign that a devil is around, and can be witnessed by even regular people.
  • Occasional property damage to buildings, building sites, landmarks, and so on, usually done by fighting spiritual adept.
  • Reishi-empowered materials, as stated before. This has caused most locally-produced items such as cars, weapons, architecture, etc. to all be more resilient, but also more expensive, making importing more valuable.

Locations & Landmarks

Gifted Avenue: A residential area where most spiritualists live. It is a spot that was isolated by the city, and is regularly denied entry into if you are a regular human.
Tar Basin: Located on the far east part of town as an oil-slick-esque trail running along the river running along Zenchou. Mundanes tend to avoid this location, and the goop itself is seemingly grafted against the rocks, unable to budge.
Blood Bridge: Tends to be where conflict occurs. Whenever a fight happens near this bridge, at least one person usually winds up severely injured or dead.
Tonio's: An international pizza & pasta chain that appeared in Zenchou a few decades ago. It is seldom unmanned and boasts numerous half-Italian or full-on Italians at a time. Spare few spiritual adepts go to these parlors unless they're in groups and willing to pay high prices.
Yagami Mansion: Large mansion far east that opens up around October every year for Halloween celebrations. There are always accidents year-round at this location but since it's spiritualist-ran the local government has given up on paying any mind to occurrences here.
Kiseki Academy: Vocational school attended by people who look for careers in utilizing their spirituality healthily, such as lumberjacks, miners, and so on. Recently, a new course for investigating and detective work has opened up, and has been getting rated highly on social media and other platforms.
Winner's Corner: Gambling spot where only 4.6% of the people go win. This was the first place to ban 'Zeus'. It is known for its pretty women, and more importantly, gamblers that seemingly seize out and fall unconscious if they lose too much.
Kisai Headquarters: A northeast investigative agency. They are the self-proclaimed rivals to Shindou Investigative, and frequently post articles bashing the state of Zenchou and its government's ignoring of the numerous problems with crime & such, ignoring the police's frequent involvement in more serious matters.
Shindou Investigative: Government-supported agency that helps Spiritualists get jobs in law. Frequently grants off-the-radar badges for spiritual adepts to wear, and keeps them in the know on happenings & tragedies across the city to tend to and look into.
The Backdoor: A spot within the far southeast of Zenchou. Mostly safe, it is reputed as a place to not go whenever you see other people willingly enter unless you know them.

Bronzestuck Mine: The location where Rockspire began to crop up. It is a mine far up north beyond the bounds of the city and has temporarily been closed.
Hinoki Headquarters: Factory far northeast home to Hinoki Timber - a lumber company that has proliferated the Kyushu region under the influence of spiritualists. They are known for their 'perfect wood' and influence in the market.
Burnboo Fireland: Constantly burning forest that's usually being actively tended to by spiritual adepts & mundanes year round. It produces a peculiar bamboo that is useful to some companies but rarely tampered with.
